December 2012 – Advent is Here!

Advent trivia: The advent wreath was originally adopted from German Lutherans in the 1500’s.
The official definition of Advent is “… that the season marks the time of spiritual preparation by the faithful before Christmas.”  It is also the beginning of our annual spiritual journey through the liturgical year, which begins with the First Sunday of Advent and concludes with the Feast of Christ the King.  None of us need much in the way of review about preparing for Christmas but we might wish to consider how Advent sets the foundation for our annul spiritual pilgrimage through each yearly liturgical cycle.  The great theme of Advent is the promise of God to save us and our world by entering, through the incarnation, our lives and our history.  In practice our Advent spiritual goal is to improve our skills in looking for and finding God, especially in and through Jesus, in our own hearts and in His grace and actions in our communities and world.  The point of Advent is to become more attuned to idea and reality that “God is with us.”  The question for Advent is, … How can I better experience the real presence of the Lord in my life?  What more can I do to find God and where is it best to look?
